Hi guys, sorry for the bloggy silence these last few days. I've not been feeling 100% and one of the big promises I've made to myself for 2014 is to go easy on myself and really listen to the needs of my mind and body.

In practical terms it simply means that when I'm not feeling great I'll be prioritising restful things like leisurely walks with the wee man, crochet or knitting and making sure I eat well with lots of fresh and healthy food. (Winter is soup season and I love soup season!) I'll also be going easy on myself and not agonising over blog posts and the like (if I have pretty, exciting or colourful stuff to share it will be just as pretty, exciting and colourful tomorrow or the next day, or even the next after that!), so if I drop offline for a few days it's just me being totally selfish with my time ;)

So these last few days I've been selfishly smelling the flowers, starting a new blanket for the wee man, flipping through the pages of my new Pompoms, swooning over delicious hand dyed yarns, hanging out at Ravelry finding new friends and projects to love as well as getting to know this utterly gorgeous linen yarn!

Oh it feels so good to be selfish... I could really get used to this!

studio details : diffusing the light | Emma Lamb

It's been a busy day photographing in my studio today, the winter light has been lovely in here. Sunny but not too harsh. That lovely winter sun that seems to bathe everything in clean light, you know? Even though the light was so gentle I still needed to diffuse it a wee bit and to do that I used my old faithful embroidered tablecloth.

It's perfect because it's such a bright white colour. I've found it in a charity shop so many years ago now, and before that I think it must have served time in a home that held many a dinner party, or possibly a restaurant or hotel around Edinburgh? I don't know, but whatever it's story it has been well used and washed so many times, probably boil washed since the cutwork stitching has become so brittle and fragile. I have to be very careful handling it these days as it will tear so easily. It spends most of it's time hiding a suitcase that sits by my desk, but every now and then it is called to action to help me with my work. I adore how the light highlights it's embroidery and cutwork, it completely reverses how it would usually look. The white stitching becomes dark and shadowy while the cutwork blazes a little trail of light across the fabric. So pretty.

hello 2014!

Hello 2014! | Emma Lamb

Hello my blog buddies and happy New Year to you all!

How are you? How were your holidays? Did you gorge yourselves silly on mountains of chocolate as I did!? I hope I am not the only one who can devour Lindt dark chocolate balls at an alarming rate!? Besides the chocolate I spent a quiet, internet free two weeks resting and allowing some of the stress of 2013 to melt away. As lovely as it was, it wasn't quite enough to be able sidestep yet another flu bug last week (I'm not having much luck with the winter bugs this year!) hence the late start to my 2014 blogging.

Ah well, the new year is always a time for optimism and possibility and I'm keeping both of those in mind when I ponder what could lie ahead this year. Already there some fun things lined up including the launch of a new book I will be featured in, which I so can't wait to see! And this week I'll be finishing up a couple of projects for some lovely magazines, you will hear all about them just as soon as I am able to tell you. Talking of magazine projects I shall have something along those lines to share with you tomorrow, a wee project I finished just before the holidays.

Until then this is a wee peek into my studio - a tidy desk and tidy shelves, a spot of list writing and a sneaky peek at some colours that are inspiring me today...

Happy New Year everyone!

ps - I forgot to mention that I shall be moderating all comments on my posts from now on because of way too much spammy-spam! So not to worry if things don't show up right away :)

studio details : a snapshot of my day

Hello my lovelies! Today my day is looking a lot like this...

studio details : a snapshot of my day | Emma Lamb

It's been a quiet day mostly spent in my pjs, tinkering with crochet flowers and organising my FB page (organising photo albums to be precise and inadvertently deleting dozens of pictures, ho-hum) while I waited in for delivery of my new toy - a spiffy new laptop. Yay!

I am so excited about getting this thing up and running so I can faff around with it's super speedy touch screen. I haven't upgraded my work computer for years so more than anything I'm hoping for looking forward to being able to have more than two programs open at once without feeling like I've just dunked it in a pot of treacle and to no more powering off tantrums! Needless to say there are going to be a few hours of software installing and I'm expecting the inevitable 'why won't it talk to my wifi' debacle! But at least I have my crochet hooks to keep my sanity intact... well, mostly.

My fabulous new Eames DSR chair at my studio desk, the perfect place for some serious making! | Emma Lamb

These last few days I've been doing a wee bit of seasonal studio shuffling, but unlike previous years this time I haven't shuffled much of my furniture. In fact the only change has been to swap out one of my red dining chairs for the spiffy new Eames DSR I've been wishing so long for.

I went for the classic bright white version and with it's shiny chrome legs it perfectly compliments the revamp I gave my studio in the spring - bright white walls and a gorgeous pale glossy grey floor. OMG, I love my Glossy grey floor! Right now the whiteness and lightness of my little room is totally coming into it's own. Even on the dreariest of dreary days (much like today!) my wee studio is a haven of uplifting brightness for me to escape to and is sure to keep me feeling extra cheerful over the coming months of darkness. I am so looking forward to being cosied up in here on chilly winter days with nothing but my crochet hooks, yarn and wee Spanner to keep me company. Bliss!

Talking of yarn, I am totally obsessed with arranging it into pretty rainbows at the moment. Who doesn't love a rainbow!? It seems to be giving me a whole new appreciation for bright yellows because no matter how hard I try a rainbow is just not a rainbow without yellow! It's even got me toying with the idea of adding this sunny Yellow Tulip Shelf to my studio to store a few magazines and whatnot. It's just so damn cute, I don't know if I'll be able to resist it's charm despite it's yellowy-ness!

Oh, and happy October everyone!
