Notes on using charts, tension and blocking can be found at the front of the book with a two page table explaining all abbreviations and chart symbols with both UK and US terminology. While this book isn't intended for novice crocheters there is a handy 'techniques' section at the back of the book with step-by-step photo tutorials for the stitches used throughout the patterns.
